Attilio Mori (1865-1937) was an Italian professor, author and geographer who visited Gozo in 1900 in connection with the preparation of a geodetic map of Malta and Italy. In November 1921, that is a year prior to the nomination of Mussolini as prime minister of Italy, Mori published an illustrated account of his stay in Gozo in the Italian Touring Club magazine 'Le Vie D'Italia'. He describes Gozo as 'the extreme limb of the motherland'. This was in line with the Fascist policy of 'redeeming' Italy's 'lost' appendages.

The illustrated talk will analyze this very rare account of Gozo at the turn of the 20th century, in the context of the political and social ambience in Malta and Italy between the two world wars. It will also be compared with contemporary accounts by other non Italian visitors to Gozo. As far as it is known, it is the first time that this account has been studied.

The lecture will be delivered by Dr Paul George Pisani at Santa Cecilja Medieval Chapel in Xewkija on Friday. Entrance is free.
