Teatru Astra has recently lauched the programme for the tenth edition of the festival which can be viewed on the Events section of this website. Festival Mediterranea uncovers the island of Gozo in all its aspects and offers all that Gozo boasts of in the cultural and artistic arena. Opera. Classical and symphonic music. A wealth of archaeology and history that is Gozo’s heritage. Festival Mediterranea focuses on our unparalleled prehistoric heritage guidied by the participation of leading UK archaeologist and scholar Dr David Trump among others. The backdrop to this festival is Gozo’s sheer, natural beauty in warm autumn, October and November.
The highlight of this month-long festival remains undoubtedly the opera, with the Teatru Astra’s choice this year falling on Vincenzo Bellini’s ‘Norma’. Two representations will be held, on Thursday 27 and on Saturday 29 October, with the participation of an international cast of repute, made up of singers who are returning to the Astra and others who are debuting locally.
Dr David Trump will be making a welcome return to the festival for a series of heritage events. Other events include an on-site lecture celebrating art in Gozo spanning three centuries led by Mr Mark Sagona and a lecture by leading historian Victor Mallia-Milanes is Professor in the Department of History at the University of Malta. The La Stella Band concludes the festival by the Annual Grand Concert on Saturday 19 November 2011.
Festival Mediterranea is organised by the Teatru Astra in Gozo. Bank of Valletta partners the project, as do the Malta Tourism Authority, the Vodafone Malta Foundation, the Ministry for Gozo and the Ministry for Finance, the Economy and Investment.
