All is now set for the double-representation of the opera Norma at the Astra Theatre in Victoria, with the curtain rising for the opening night tomorrow. A second performance will be held on Saturday.

This year’s production sees another stellar cast, led by Greek soprano and legend Dimitra Theodossiou, currently considered as one of the most popular and important sopranos in the world. She tackles the very demanding title role, immortalised by none other than Maria Callas, and is joined by tenor Antonino Interisano as Pollione, mezzo-soprano Oana Andra as Adalgisa and bass Dario Russo as Oroveso. Other members of the cast include soprano Dorienne Portelli as Clotilde and tenor Cliff Zammit Stevens as Flavio.

The artistic direction is in the hands of Italian Enrico Stinchelli, famed for his Rai Radio 3 weekly programme La Barcaccia about opera. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra plays under the baton of Joseph Vella while the Astra Opera Chorus is led by Maria Frendo. This year’s production is a traditional one that nonetheless seeks to create connections between its classical setting and today. The production involves scenic techniques that are probably being used for the first time in Malta, to create a stage that gives a fuller third dimension making an interesting use of modern technology and the most traditional aspects of stagecraft.

Finishing touches were carried out these last days just before the final rehearsals this week. The set revolves around the oak tree that is a symbol of the deity that all refer to as well as Norma’s dwelling. Scenic artist Joseph Cauchi and his team of volunteers, led by Carmel Zammit and Emanuel John Farrugia as stage masters, have transformed Mr Stinchelli’s designs and suggestions into an impressive set complete with construction and illusions. Lights are being set up by Ismael Portelli and George Zammit. Manuel Grima and George Farrugia are wardrobe masters. Andrew Portelli is assistant schenographer and Donald Micallef is the operations manager.Antonella Zammit is the production assistant whilst artistic director Enrico Stinchelli is assisted by Dorothy Baldacchino and Ulduz Ashraf Gandomi.
