Film soundtracks come alive at the Astra

30 January 2011

Several soundtracks from popular films will come to life during the concert ‘Soundtracks
Alive: music from the movies!’ being held at Teatru Astra in Victoria, Gozo on Saturday 12
February. The concert, entrance to which is free of charge, sees the involvement of most
members of the La Stella Philharmonic Band, for the first time under the direction of George
Apap, clarinetist and music director for the band’s youth section.

Well-known compositions from films or cartoons as different as Spirit: Stallion of the
Cimarron, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King to Ennio Morricone’s The Mission,
John William’s Schindler’s List, James Horner’s Titanic and The Mask of Zorro as well as
Nino Rota’s iconic The Godfather will be played alongside soundtracks from Hatari (Henry
Mancini), Last of the Mohicans (Trevor Jones) and Ben-Hur (Miklos Rozsa).

A first-timer for a local band will be selections from Hans Zimmer’s The Da Vinci Code,
nominated for the 2007 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.

Final preparations are currently in full swing, for members of the band as well as for
members of the Centre Stage Dance Academy, choreographed by young choreographer and
dancer Natalie Sciortino, who will be enhancing selected pieces with a visual interpretation.

The concert, which is expected to go down well with cinema-lovers and soundtrack-lovers,
starts at 7.30pm. Seating is on a first-come first-served basis. More information from
