The Sunday Times of Malta magazine, Sunday Circle, distributed with the 4th September edition includes a feature on the forthcoming opera season in Gozo. The introductory paragraph to the article correctly states that ‘‘as autumn sets in and the temperature begins to drop, prepare to sail to our sister island and immerse yourself in the world of times gone by at Gozo’s two leading opera houses. This October, the sound of opera will fill the air once again, providing the general public with a dose of high-calibre cultural entertainment.’’
Mariella Camilleri, who pens the article speaks to Marion Zammit, from the Teatru Astra on the preparations currently underway ahead of Norma and the tenth edition of Festival Mediterranea. Due prominence is given to the engagement of world-class star Dimitra Theodossiou who will be singing the title role of Norma, a role which calls for tremendous vocal control of range, flexibility and dynamics reflecting the plot’s emotions of ‘‘romantic love, jealous, maternal love, personal conflict, murderous intent and resignation.’’
Reference is also made to the other events making up the tenth edition of Festival Mediterranea, namely the number of concerts of different musical genres, prehistoric culture by archaeologist and scholar Dr David Trump and visits to baroque churches. The article is accompanied by beautiful pictures from Teatru Astra's recent operas; La Traviata (2010), Rigoletto (2009), Turandot (2008) and Macbeth (2007).
The author concludes the noteworthy four-page feature stating that ‘‘travelling to Gozo for an evening at the opera can be an exhilarating experience during the month of October when the nights are clear and balmy. These highly prestigious events present the perfect setting for an unforgettable night out.’’
