On Saturday morning Teatru Astra welcomed Prime Minster Dr Lawrence Gonzi who visited the theatre and met the committee and volunteers in the run-up to the double production of Norma which kick-starts the tenth edition of Festival Mediterranea on 27 October 2011.
The Prime Minister and his entourage toured through the theatre, backstage and workshops which are currently bustling with activity. He was briefed on the state of the preparations ahead of the opera and on the programme of events of the tenth edition of the Festival by Michael Formosa Administrative Secretary of the La Stella Philharmonic Society. The Prime Minister also visited the recent refurbishment works carried out on the stage through a programme financed by the Eco Gozo fund supported by the Ministry for Gozo. The Prime Minister's delegation included Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono and Parliamentary Secretary Dr Chris Said.
The Prime Minster expressed his appreciation and support for the high quality cultural ventures of Teatru Astra and encouraged the committee to sustain this significant contribution which benefits the community and the country. At the end of the almost one hour tour the Prime Minister signed the theatre’s visitors book and was presented with a gift to mark his visit.
