The Times of Malta today reports extensivley the opera educational workshop with young students carried out at St Margaret’s College, Cottonera yesterday 19 October 2010. The numerous members of the press who attended were later addressed by Mr Michael Formosa, on behalf of the Festival Mediterranea organising committee, Prof. Mro. Joseph Vella, Festival Mediterranea Music Director, and Mr Marco Gandini, Artistic Director for La Traviata. More than 100 secondary students sat mesmerised as they were treated to a live show by top operatic performers who exposed them to new genres of music.
Marco Gandini, the opera director of the upcoming La Traviata, came up with the idea for the workshop at St Margaret’s College, Cottonera, to create awareness on the beauty of musical expressions through fun and opera.
The boys listened attentively, at times covering their mouths to suppress a giggle, as Mr Gandini took them on a journey of popular music and a discussion of lyrics.
He then played a CD of a recorded opera and followed it by a live interpretation by Gozitan soprano Miriam Cauchi and Italian tenor Alessandro Liberatore, to show them the difference between live and studio recordings.
This initiative was followed by a press conference by Astra Theatre yesterday to announce the full cast for its upcoming opera production.
