Young Maltese tenor singing his first opera in Gozo

Young Maltese Tenor, Cliff Zammit Stevens will be singing his very first opera at Teatru Astra in the forthcoming Norma, where he will be interpreting the role of Flavio.  Cliff Zammit Stevens described as having an ”absolutely ethereal voice and knows instinctively what to do with his voice” by the Sunday Times is a 22 year old Tenor currently reading for a Bachelor of Music with honours degree in Vocal studies at the coveted Royal College of Music in London.

Cliff started his theatrical training at the age of twelve when he joined Stagecoach Theatre Arts School. He then joined Masquerade Theatre Arts School for the next three years. He started his vocal training at the age of 14 with renowned soprano Gillian Zammit whom he continues to study with from time to time. At the RCM Cliff studies with tenor Tim Evans-Jones.

Cliff has taken part in many workshops and master classes with highly praised musicians including; Delfo Menicucci, Juliette Bisazza, Janis Kelly and Sally Burgess. Credits include leading roles in several Musical Theatre productions, namely 1565 – the Musical, West Side Story, The Wiz and Rock Nativity. Cliff also took part in many concerts and credits for opera include Britten’s ‘The Little Sweep’, Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ and Humperdinck’s ‘Hansel and Gretel’. In London Cliff was part of Britten’s War Requiem at the RCM, Mozart’s ‘Ascanio in Alba’ at King’s Place, Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ and Purcell’s ‘Dioclesian’ both at the RCM.

Cliff’s recent achievements include representing the RCM at the prestigious Junior Ferrier awards and successfully making it to the final rounds to high critical acclaim – “He has the commitment, drive and charisma to be a performer and the quality and appeal of voice to complete the essential qualities to fulfill his potential.” He also performed at the Royal Albert hall in London and had the honour of performing in a master class for Robert Sutherland (Maria Callas’ ex-accompanist).
